In certain instances, such as sending the unit in for repair or upgrading the firmware, the Symbol MC70 Hand Held Terminal may need to be re-configured and re-loaded with the TelnetCE software. The steps below can be used to accomplish this task.
Configuring the MC70
- Power on the unit. Typically, you will need to wait about 15 seconds before you can proceed.
- With the stylus, tap Start > Settings
- At the bottom of the screen, ensure that the "Personal" tab is the active window. Then tap the Input icon.
- Tap the "Word Completion" tab at the bottom.
- Clear the check mark from the "Suggest words..." box.
- Put a check mark in the "Replace text..." box.
- Tap OK at the top right of the screen to close this window.
- Tap the Owner Information icon.
- Tap the "Identification" tab at the bottom of the screen. If the on-screen keyboard does not display, tap the keyboard icon at the bottom of the screen.
- In the Name field, enter "HHT #1" or "HHT #2" as appropriate. This name will display on the main "desktop" screen of the HHT and will be an easy way to identify which unit this one is.
- In the Phone field, enter your phone number.
- Optionally, you may enter data into the Company, Address and E-mail fields.
- Tap OK to close this Window.
- At the bottom of the screen, tap the "System" tab.
- Tap the About icon. The tap the "Device ID" tab at the bottom.
- In the Device Name field, enter "HHT_1" or "HHT_2" as appropriate. Note that this field does not accept spaces or the "#" sign. This is the name that will be used to identify the HHT to your PC when syncing programs from the PC to the HHT using the ActiveSync application and the cradle.
- In the Description field, enter a "human readable" name, such as your city name followed by the unit number. Example: "Los Angeles HHT #1".
- Tap OK to close this window.
- Tap the Backlight icon. Ensure that the "Battery Power" tab is active.
- Put a check mark in the "Disable backlight..." box and change the time to 5 minutes.
- Put a check mark in the "Enable backlight..." box.
- Tap the "External Power" tab.
- Clear the check mark from the "Disable backlight..." box.
- Put a check mark in the "Enable backlight..." box.
- Tap OK to close this window.
- Tap the Clock & Alarms icon. Ensure the "Time" tab is active.
- Ensure the "Home" button is selected.
- Set the time zone, time of day, and date as appropriate. Note that on the calendar for changing the date, the year can be advanced quickly by taping on the year itself and then using the up/down arrows. Note also that the time set in the HHT will have no effect on the time that will be "stamped" on the rental agreements when they are closed. The close time on the RAs will come form the CARS+ server. Setting the time in the HHT is simply a convenience to have a reference to the correct time and date.
- Tap the "More" tab. Put a check mark in the "Display the clock" box.
- Tap OK to close this window.
- Tap the Keylight icon. Ensure the "Battery Power" icon is active.
- Put a check mark in the "Disable keylight..." box and change the time to 5 minutes.
- Put a check mark in the "Enable keylight..." box.
- Tap the "External Power" tab.
- Clear the check mark from both the "Disable..." and the "Enable..." boxes.
- Tap the "Advanced" tab.
- Clear the check mark from both the "Disable..." and the "Track..." boxes.
- Tap OK to close this window.
- Tap the Power icon. Then tap the "Advanced" tab.
- Put a check mark in the "On Battery Power..." box and set the time to 5 minutes.
- Put a check mark in the "On External Power..." box and set the time to 10 minutes.
- Tap OK to close this window.
- Tap the Screen icon. Then tap the "Clear Type" tab.
- Put a check mark in the "Enable Clear Type" box.
- Tap OK to close this window.
- Tap the "X" in the upper right corner of the screen to close the Settings menu and return to the Desktop.
Installing and Configuring the Wavelink TelnetCE Applications to your Windows PC
- The PC will need to have three Wavelink programs loaded as
listed below. These programs can be installed from the "Thermeon HHT
Package" CD that was shipped along with the HHT equipment. Please
contact Thermeon Customer Support if you have misplaced your CD. The programs are:
- The
TelnetCE program itself. This program will place an icon on your
desktop that says "Wavelink MC70 TelnetCE". Once installed, this
program must be properly configured. Contact Thermeon Customer Support
for assistance with this.
- SSH support for the TelnetCE
program. There will be no icon on your desktop for this. Contact
Thermeon Customer Support if you need to determine if this program is
installed.
- SSH support for the HHT. This program will pace
an icon on your desktop that says ""Shortcut to
wl_ssh_support_ce_1_00_04_as.exe". Note that this name may be truncated.
- Insert the CD and navigate the the following directory: MC70 > Wavelink > Applications. Within this directory, there will be three programs as shown below. Depending on your PC's settings, you may not see the ".exe" at the end of the program name.
- SSHInstall_10001.exe
- wl_ssh_support_ce_1_00_04_as.exe
- wltn_sym_mc70_wm50_5_11_31_as.exe
- Double-click on each of the above files and follow the on-screen instructions to install. It is important to install the files in the order shown above.
- Make a note as to whether this directory on the CD also contains a file named "Thermeon HHT.wltna"
- Locate the icon on the Desktop (of the Windows PC) labeled "Wavelink MC70 TelnetCE". Double-click this icon to start the application.
- Does the CD contain the "Thermeon HHT.wltna" file (as per step 4 above)? If yes, please continue with step 7 below. If no, then skip to step 8 below.
- Click on the button labeled "Import/Export Settings".
- Click the button for "Import (load) emulation settings saved in a file", then click OK.
- Browse to the "Thermeon HHT.wltna" file on the CD and select it. Click "Open".
- You will receive a message that "the settings were restored successfully". Click OK.
- You are now done and can continue with the next section "Installing the TelnetCE Application to the MC70".
- Click the button labeled "Host Profiles". Click "New".
- Ensure the "Host" tab is selected at the top of the window. Enter data as follows:
- Name = CARS+Internet
- Type = VT100
- Address = www.carsplusnet.com
- Port = 22 (Note: This setting should change automatically when selecting SSH Encryption in the next step)
- Place a check mark in the box for "Use SSH Encryption". Clear the check mark from the box for "Tunnel Telnet using SSH...". Note: If you do not see either of these SSH check boxes, it means you have not successfully installed the SSH support files. Please re-install the program listed in 2b above and then repeat this process.
- Click the SSH tab. Put a check mark in the box for "Save passwords while Telnet is running". Click the OK button at the bottom right of the window.
- Click the "Emulation Parameters" button. To change the parameters listed below, double-click on the parameter name. From the new window that pops up, select the correct parameter from the drop-down list and click OK.
- Click the "plus" sign (+) to the left of the folder icon labeled Emulation.
- Click the "+" to the left of Keyboard. Change the following parameters:
- Caps Lock = Never Change
- Startup Keyboard = Emulation
- Click the "+" to the left of Printing. Change the following parameters:
- Printer Flow Control = Hardware
- Printer Protocol = Bluetooth
- Printer Type = User Defined
- Reprint Option = No
- Click the "+" to the left of VT and HP. Then click the "+" to the left of VT. Change the following parameters:
- VT100 Background Color = Blue
- VT100 Foreground Color = Yellow
- Note: The above two settings are optional. If you desire more contrast, you can leave these settings at the default of Black and White.
- Click the "+" to the left of Indicators. Change the following parameters:
- Enable Battery Strength Indicator = Yes
- Enable Signal Strength Indicator = Yes
- Indicators Preferred Off-Screen = Command Bar or System Tray
- Click the "+" to the left of Scanner. Then click the "+" to the left of I2of5. Change the following parameter:
- Symbology I2of5 = Enable
- From the menu at the top of the window, click File > Save. This will return you to the original MC70 configuration program window. You may either close the program or leave it open if continuing with the next section below.
Installing the TelnetCE Application to the MC70
- Connect the MC70 cradle to the USB port of a Windows PC. The PC must have the Microsoft ActiveSync application installed. If it does not, then you will need to download and install the program from www.microsoft.com.
- The first time you cradle a device with ActiveSync running, you will be guided through a short setup routine. As part of this, you will be asked which items you wish to synchronize. It is necessary only to synchronize Files. Do not attempt to set up an email account on the HHT.
- Make sure you have installed and configured all three Wavelink TelnetCE programs to your PC as detailed in the section above.
- Insert the HHT into the cradle and wait for the device to connect and synchronize (as shown in the ActiveSync window).
- Open the Wavelink MC70 TelnetCE program (if not already open from the section above).
- At the bottom of the screen, click the button labeled "Application & Config".
- After installing, the program will tell you to check the Mobile Device (the HHT) for further instructions. Leave this message on your PC until you have completed the installation on the HHT (next step).
- On the HHT screen, you will see a message asking you where you wish to install the software. Choose "Device" and then tap the word "Install" at the bottom.
- Once you receive the "software successfully installed" mesage on the HHT, you may clear the message window on the PC.
- Note: You may have to repeat steps b and c above to complete the installation.
- You may now close the TelnetCE program on the PC.
- Install the SSH Support to the HHT by clicking on the "Shortcut to wl_ssh_support..." icon on the PC.
- Click the "Next" button.
- Complete the installation as detailed in steps 4b and 4c above.
- You may now close the SSH support program.
Configuring the WiFi Radio on the MC70
- Before starting this process, make sure you have the "HHT Configuration" sheet that was provided by Thermeon and packed with the HHT equipment when it was sent to you. There is also a copy of this document on the "Thermeon HHT Package" CD that was shipped with the HHT equipment.
- At the bottom right corner of the desktop on the HHT there are two icons. One is for the Bluetooth radio (for printing) and the other is for the WiFi radio (for connecting to the CARS+ server).
- Make sure your Access Point (radio base station) it turned on and that the HHT is within range of the Access Point.
- Tap on the WiFi radio icon. A menu will pop up. Tap on "Find WLANs".
- After a moment or two, the screen will display a list of all wireless networks within radio range. Locate your Access Point in this list. Typically, it will be the one named "thermeon".
- With the stylus, press and hold on the entry for your Access Point until a menu pops up. Tap on "connect" on that menu.
- A new window will open labeled "Profile Entry".
- The first screen should show the name of your Access Point (typically "thermeon") in both the "Name" and "ESSID" boxes. Tap "Next".
- Set the parameters as follows:
Operating Mode = Infrastructure
Country = Allow Any Country
Tap "Next"
- Authentication = None
Tap "Next"
- Encryption = 128-bit WEP
Key Index = 1
Use Passkey = not checked
Tap "Next"
- Enter the encryption key as shown on your HHT Configuration sheet. Remember, you can tap the keyboard icon at the bottom of the screen to use the on-screen keyboard if it is not already displaying. Every asterisk (*) must be replaced by a number or letter (letters a through f only). Double check your entry to make sure it is correct. Tap "Next".
- IP Address Entry -- Refer to your HHT Configuration sheet for the correct setting. If you have been assigned a "fixed" IP address (a group of numbers as opposed to DHCP), then select "Static" on this screen. Tap "Next". If you selected "DHCP", please skip to step "i" below.
- Enter the IP Address and Subnet Mask as specified on the HHT Configuration sheet. Place a check mark in the "Advanced" box. Tap "Next".
- Enter the Gateway (G/W) and DNS addresses as specified on the HHT Configuratoin sheet. Leave the WINS setting at the default of all zeroes. Tap "Next".
- Transmit Power = Automatic
Tap "Next"
- Battery Usage = Fast Power Save
Tap "Finish"
- Tap "OK" in the upper right corner to close the "Find WLANs" window.
Configuring the Bluetooth Radio on the MC70
- Locate the printer that is to be "paired" with this HHT. The printers should be labeled #1 and #2 to match the HHTs. If possible, locate both printers so that both may be paired. Note: The direcctions that follow assume that both printers will be paired.
- On the back side of the printer is a label which contains the serial number of the printer. Make a note of which serial number belongs to which printer. Typically, the lower serial number is printer #1 and the higher number is printer #2.
- Locate the Bluetooth icon at the bottom right corner of the screen. If the icon has a yellow box with an exclamation point (!) in it, the radio is disabled. Enable the radio by pressing on the icon until the menu appears. Then tap "Enable Bluetooth". It will take a moment for the radio to initialize.
- Press on the Bluetooth icon until the menu appears, then tap "Show BTExplorer".
- Tap File > New Connection
- From the drop-down list, select "Connect to Printer". Tap "Next".
- After a moment or two, you should see an icon for both printers. Tap on the icon for printer #1, then tap "Next".
- The next screen will say "Explore Remote Device". There is nothing to do on this screen. Tap "Connect".
- On this screen, you can select the COM (serial port) to assign to this printer. If this is HHT #1, assign COM4 (the default). If this is HHT #2, assign COM5. Tap "OK".
- You will now be back at the original BTExplorer screen where you started. You should see a "favorite" icon for the printer just installed.
- Repeat step 5 above to pair the second printer. When done, Tap the "X" at the top right to close the BTExplorer program.
Configuring and Licensing the Wavelink TelnetCE Software
- Make sure you have either the HHT Configuration sheet or the "Thermeon HHT Package" CD available before beginning this process.
- Start the TelnetCE program. The first time the software is started, you will need to tap Start > Programs > TelnetCE. After that, you will see the TelnetCE program in "recently used programs" area of the Start Menu.
- Note: The on-screen keyboard that has been used up to this point is one that is supplied by the MC70 operating system. However, there is a different on-screen keyboard supplied by the TelnetCE software which works better for the TelnetCE application. To activate this keyboard, tap Options... > View > Emulation Keyboard. If this item has a check mark by it, then the TelnetCE keyboard has already been enabled.
- License the software as follows:
- Tap Options... > Configure > Authorization
- If prompted, enter the password specified on the HHT Configuration sheet. Typically is will be "config". Tap "OK" when done. If correct license data appears in all of the data-entry boxes on this screen, the software is already licensed. You may close this window and skip to step 5 below. If not, then continue with step 4c immediately below.
- Be sure to select the correct Platform from drop-down list before you enter any other data. Refer to the HHT Configuration sheet for the correct setting. Typically it will be "TelnetCE 5.1 VT".
- Enter the remaining data as specified on the HHT Configuration sheet. Note that the data is case-sensitive. Double-check your entries to make sure they are correct.
- In the box labeled "User #:", enter "1" for HHT #1 or enter "2" for HHT #2.
- Tap the "Authorize" button when done. If all the data was entered correctly, you will receive an "authorization successful" message.
- Set the correct printer port for this HHT as follows:
- Tap "TermConfig".
- Enter the password as specified on the HHT Configuration sheet. Typically, this will be "config". Tap "OK" when done.
- Select the "CARS+Internet" profile and tap "OK".
- At the top of this window, you will see a series of tabs. At the right side of the screen, in line with the tabs, will be a right and left arrow. Tap the righ arrow repeatedly until the tabs scroll all the way to the end and you can see the tab labeled "Printer". Tap the "Printer" tab.
- Set the "Port" to "COM4:" for HHT #1 and to "COM5:" for HHT #2. It should not be necessary to change anything else on this screen.
- Tap "OK" at the top of the screen.
The HHT should now be ready for use.
