For rental operations in regions that have severe winters, one of the annual tasks is that of installing snow tires on rental cars. CARS+ provides the ability to track the application and removal of snow tires on units. And during the transition period, it clearly indicates to the counter agent which units have snow tires and which do not. This chapter covers the set up steps necessary and the steps to follow when installing and removing snow tires.
A. GVT CODES
The following GVT records must be set up to turn on this feature, contact your Thermeon Customer Support representative for assistance:
- SECUREST - this activates the logic for installing and removing snow tires
- SNOWTIRE - this changes the Vehicle Search program to display the snow tire indicator
B. OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT CODES
This is an optional step, only required by Hertz locations. Use the program Edit Vehicle Options to define a two character code for installed Snow Tires as illustrated below. If using an option code other than ST, the option code must be specified in the Alpha field of the GVT record SNOWTIRE.
OPTION: EDIT VEHICLE OPTIONS
1 Code ST

4 MQ Quantity

C. SERVICE CODES
Using the program Service Code File Update, define two Service Codes, one for installing snow tires and the other for removing them. Enter a new service code that that defines and describes the installation of snow tires in fields 1 and 2. Place the Vehicle Equipment code previously defined for snow tires in field 14 and place an "A" (for "Adding" snow tires) in Field 15. (for non-Hertz clients, this value is not validated against the previous table). The records will look something like the following:
The record for installing Snow Tires should look something like the following:

Create a new service code that defines and describes the removal of the snow tires from the vehicle in fields 1 and 2. Place the Vehicle Equipment code previously defined for snow tires in field 14. and place an "R" (for "Removing" snow tires) in Field 15. (for non-Hertz clients, this value is not validated against the previous table).

D. OPTIONAL CHARGE FOR SNOW TIRE EQUIPPED VEHICLES
The above set up will allow you to track when snow tires have been installed on a vehicle or when they have been remove. It will NOT charge extra for snow tire equipped vehicles. If you desire to charge a surcharge for snow tire equipped vehicles:
- Set up an Optional Charge Code in Edit Optional Items
- Set up the appropriate rate in Edit Option Rates
- Finally assign the Option to the Snow Tire equipped vehicles in Vehicle Inventory Control as shown below:

WARNING: Using Vehicle History Update as outlined below will NOT automatically add the Optional Charge to the Vehicle. Nor will removing Snow Tires cause this option to be removed from the vehicle. Both actions must be done manually.
1. To install snow tires on a vehicle, use Vehicle History Update. Use the service code that was defined in step C above as illustrated below:
The screen will then display:

2. To remove snow tires after the winter season, use Vehicle History Update with the removal Service code. That will automatically remove the Equipment Option Code from the Vehicle record.
When renting vehicles through the RA Open program, do an F6 search of the Vehicle file. Those units that have Snow Tires installed will have the two character Vehicle Optional Equipment Code that is defined for snow tires right after the abbreviation for the color of the vehicle. See the vehicle record on row 5 below.
