Definition: Printer controls are the commands sent by CARS+ to set various print characteristics on your printer. Because printers differ from manufacturer to manufacturer, this program is used to "translate" CARS+ print commands to a "language" that your printer understands.

This Program is used to:

Before using this program:

In order to use this program you must have a copy of the User Manual for the printer you wish to command. Find in the manual that section or appendix that describes the "Print Commands". For example, the User Manual for the Okidata Microline 320 has these commands in Section 7 entitled "Commands".

To access the Edit Printer Control program, type EDITPRTR (RET) at any menu "OPTION:" field or the appropriate line number on the Control File menu. The screen will then display:

Enter data as follows:

1. PRINT TYPE

Enter up to 8 alphanumeric characters to indicate the type of Printer.

See the chapter on Edit Terminal Records for the list of acceptable Printer Type Codes.

EXAMPLE: Type OKI320 (RET).

2. PRINT ACTION

From the list below, enter up to 8 alphanumeric characters to describe the Print Action to be taken.

Note: For most of the actions in the list below there is a command to turn an action on and a matching command to turn it off (such as BOLD and UNBOLD). When setting up a new action record you MUST also set up a record for turning the feature off.

EXAMPLE: Type BOLD (RET).

Valid Print Actions Are:

COMPR - Compress Print

ENDCOMP - Turn off Compress Print

LOAD - Load Page to Start Print

UNLOAD - Unload Page after Print to Tear off

NULL - Send Null Values to Printer

RLF - Reverse Line Feed

BOLD - Set Print Style to Bold Print

UNBOLD - Turn off Bold Print

2HIGH - Set Print to Double High Print

2HEND - Turn off Double High Print

2WIDE - Set Print to Double Wide Print

xxCPI - Set Characters Per Inch to xx

xLPI - Set Lines Per Inch to x

xxLPP - Set Lines Per Page to xx

Using your printer's manual find the escape sequence for the printer action wanted. Then using the ASCII chart at the end of this chapter, enter one 2 character hexadecimal code, one per line, for each character needed for the escape sequence the print action requires.

For example, the manual for an Okidata Microline 320 states that the Microline Standard ASCII Commands for turning on BOLD is ESC H. Using the table at the end of this chapter the hexadecimal equivalent is 1B, 48. The command to turn off BOLD is ESC I which is 1B, 49.

The screen will then display the following for turning on BOLD:
