Most dot matrix printers have the capability to print in several character fonts, and can be set for various character spacing (characters/inch or cpi). The standard font size is elite (10 cpi) and is used to print RAs.

Using 10 cpi, a maximum of 80 characters can be printed on paper that is 8.5 inches wide. This creates a problem for some CARS+ reports which are 132 characters wide. The two solutions are to either use wider paper, such as 14 7/8 inches or smaller (condensed) characters. This program sets dot matrix printers to use condensed print usually from 15 to 17 cpi so that 132 character reports will fit on 8.5 inch paper.

Changes made by this program will remain in effect until the printer is turned off and back on. At that time the printer will return to its default settings.

NOTE: This program does not need to be used on printers attached to VDTs. CARS+ expects their printers to have narrow carriages (8.5 inches) and will automatically condense the print for all 132 character reports. These printers will automatically be restored to default settings after completion of the report.

To access the Set Condensed Print program, type CONDENSE (RET) at any menu "OPTION:" field or the appropriate line number on the System Configuration menu. The screen will then display your default CARS+ report printer assignment.
